Mustafa Hulusi was born in a Turkish Mediterranean Islamic heritage, yet raised within an Anglo-Saxon secular culture. Like many immigrants, he had to re-engineer his outlook into running different systems concurrently by devising a custom, self-made dual hybrid culture. He used this potentially detrimental mismatch and point of friction to advantage by showing a new model of operation.
Hulusi received his BA in Fine Art and Critical Studies from Goldsmiths College, London, and his MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art, London. He also holds an MA in Critical Theory from Central St. Martins School of Art, London. Hulusi's practice has a continuous fascination with the notion of the ecstatic; a process that historically allows the individual to break free of their predetermined identity and to transform themselves through acts such as performativity, ritual, carnival, costume, music, and dance.
The geometric designs that accompany the flower diptych paintings create viewers to think profoundly of the finitude and infinity with new approaches to seeing and thinking. Like the North and the South of Cyprus, the Christian and the Muslims, the Greek and the Turk, Mustafa Hulusi believes these pendulum-like factors can only be overcome through a process of transcendence via the ecstasy of color saturation leading thereby the formation of a new identity.
터키계 키프로스인 이슬람교 유산에서 태어난 훌루시는 앵글로색슨인 세속문화에서 자랐다. 많은 이민자들과 같이 두 개의 관습을 동시에 따를 수 있도록 인생관을 재설계해 나가며 혼성 문화 관습을 강구했다. 해로울 수 있는 부조화와 마찰점의 새로운 사례를 보여줌으로써 이를 장점으로 승화시켯다.
훌루시는 미술명문인 골드스미스칼리지(Goldsmiths College)에서 순수미술과 비평을 전공했다. 로열칼리지오브아트(Royal College of Art)에서 사진을 전공하고, 이어 세인트마틴칼리지(Saint Martins College)에서 철학과 미술이론을 공부하고 있는 실력파 작가다. 작가의 수련은 황홀경에 대한 관념에 지속적으로 매료되어 있다. 역사적으로 미리 정해진 개인의 정체성에서 벗어나 수행성, 의식, 축제, 의상, 음악, 춤과 같은 행위를 통해 스스로를 변화시키는 것이다.
기하학적 디자인과 극사실화 꽃의 딥틱 작품을 통해 오늘날 우리에게 새로운 시각과 사고의 접근으로 유한성과 무한성을 깊이 생각하게 한다. 사이프러스 섬의 남부와 북부, 기독교인과 무슬림, 그리스인과 투르크인처럼 추와같은 요소들은 황홀한 색채를 통한 초월의 과정을 통해 극복되며 이로써 새로운 정체성을 형성하게 된다.
