Lives and works in Japan

Born in Osaka, Japan, Noritoshi Mitsuuchi (b. 1978) studied at Kobe Design University and currently lives and works in Osaka. Since 2002, he has pursued his artistic practice, exhibiting in Japan and internationally. Through his collaboration with Bill Brady, a gallerist recognised in the American contemporary art scene for his discerning eye for emerging talent, Mitsuuchi brought his work to a wider audience in the United States.

The artist has developed a painterly language that brings together forms recalling children’s drawings, freedom of expression, and emotional depth. Moving between memory and imagination, his paintings explore how childhood sensibilities resurface within adult experience.

At the heart of his practice is a desire to return to a child’s way of seeing. He seeks to set aside techniques acquired over time and the complexities of thought formed in adulthood, allowing emotion and intuition to emerge more freely on the canvas. His belief that striving for perfection in art can obscure what matters most encapsulates this approach. The childlike simplicity of his paintings is a chosen means of giving expression to experience and feeling.

This exploration can be understood as a “mental time journey”: a passage through memories held deep within, seeking to reconnect with childhood perceptions and the freedom of imagination that can recede as we grow older. Amid the constant stimulation of contemporary life, his paintings offer room to pause and attend to one’s emotions. Just as music evokes different feelings and memories in each listener, he hopes that viewers will reconnect with their own experiences through his work.

Knights, warriors, wizards, fairies, princesses, princes, and animals, evoking Japanese folk tales and European fairy tales, inhabit his canvases as beings that move between dreams and reality. They carry the artist’s own experiences and emotions while offering viewers a way into the imaginative worlds of childhood. Emerging from familiar stories, these forms acquire new meanings as they encounter each viewer’s memories.

Mitsuuchi’s paintings bring the freedom of childhood imagination into dialogue with a sensibility developed through years of practice. Within images where past and present, dreams and reality overlap, viewers may encounter their younger selves, reflect on their feelings in the present, and imagine their futures. Through these encounters, his work opens a space for reflection in which personal memory gives rise to new imaginings.
