OBSESSION
When we reach for what we need,
we may find happiness.
When we reach for what we want,
we hear the nuts and bolts of the universe
begin to rattle.
This is why we cannot escape
the appeal of OBSESSION.
The tattooed figures in my paintings are, to me,
sculptures with a nervous system.
They exist in a condition
that is unmistakably human—
alive with impulse, tension, and vulnerability.
They appear in different states
of OBSESSION.
As do we.
The wise man seeks
detachment and tranquility.
The fool seeks OBSESSION.
He yields to it,
and each time it ruins him.
Beyond every OBSESSION
another awaits.
And so the fool dies a thousand deaths,
only to return with the sunrise.
OBSESSION is killing us.
We die daily,
and yet we are born again.
Perhaps that is precisely
what we need.

우리가 필요로 하는 것을 향해 손을 뻗을 때,
우리는 행복을 발견할 수도 있다.
우리가 원하는 것을 향해 손을 뻗을 때,
우주의 나사와 볼트가
흔들리기 시작하는 소리를 듣게 된다.
그렇기에 우리는
집착의 매혹에서 벗어날 수 없다.
내 회화 속 문신을 새긴 인물들은, 내게 있어
신경계를 지닌 조각들이다.
그들은 충동과 긴장,
그리고 연약함을 품은 채,
분명히 인간적인 상태로 존재한다.
그들은 서로 다른
집착의 상태들 속에 놓여 있다.
우리 역시 그러하듯.
현명한 이는
초연함과 평온을 구한다.
어리석은 이는
집착을 구한다.
그는 그것에 자신을 내맡기고,
그때마다 스스로 무너진다.
모든 집착 너머에는
또 다른 집착이 기다리고 있다.
그리하여 어리석은 이는
천 번의 죽음을 맞고,
해가 떠오를 때마다 다시 돌아온다.
집착은
우리를 죽이고 있다.
우리는 날마다 죽고,
그럼에도 다시 태어난다.
어쩌면 그것이야말로
정확히 우리에게 필요한 것인지도 모른다.

Leo Park (b. 1980) is a Swedish artist based in Stockholm. His paintings interweave the visual languages of art history and popular culture, juxtaposing classical iconography with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. In his work, the body is not only a subject of representation but also a surface upon which lines, signs, inscriptions, and ornaments accumulate. Nudes, ornamental linework, and symbolic markings compress multiple temporalities and cultural references into a single image, lending his paintings a sensuous yet uncanny density. At the same time, his work revisits universal themes such as desire, creation, and death through mythic figures and archetypal structures, making ancient forms newly legible in the present. In this way, his work reveals tensions between body and language, culture and nature, classicism and contemporaneity, unfolding a visual world that is both seductive and strange.
